Earth Chapter Outpost

This earbuds origins are tenaciously hazy, even to the prying perception of the bureaus most skilled & seasoned explorers. Its introduction to the collective consciousness begins with a wandering vagabond.

He knew himself as Arthur the day he stumbled upon this earpiece. The first thing he heard as he wedged it into his ear was whispered gibberish. Now, Arthur may have been a wild man, but he was no fool. The technology may have been new, but he knew that this device was merely a channel which lacked the ability to generate sound on its own. Dumbfounded, he tried it in the other ear, in various environments, and even with his head submerged in a pond. The voice continued whispering, always in this strange language.

The Bureau’s panel on Spiritual & Religious Cosmologies describes the gibberish as “glossiolalia” or “speaking in holy tongues”. The Department of Cryptology & Exotic Linguistics claims the sounds & syntax to be a colorful rendition of the Enochian dialect documented by John Dee.

To Arthur, the voice was a mysterious river of inanities which was compelling - at first for its curiosity, eventually for the companionship he began to feel in it. After the crisp evening of a full October moon, it was a presence he could not bear to be without. That night he dozed off for the first time with the bud still snugly in his ear. When he woke, he understood the voice. It spoke clearly to him in a way which led him to believe it was reading his mind. “Hermes” it called him as it poured divine wisdom in through the wire, into his ear, flooding his brain.

That morning he was Arthur no more, for Hermes heard the voice of God, and was moved to spout it on the street corners, hilltops, and whatever city’s hall he happened through. Hermes was a faithful messenger, with the voice of a master orator, but the citizens of the world were still asleep to the language of God. Try as he did to translate, Hermes’ eloquent iterations of divine wisdom fell “like pearls before swine.”

When Hermes babbled his last refrain, he followed the voice of his only friend - out of his body, through the wire, and into the cosmic ether. The earpiece has been silent ever since.

According to the Bureau’s most recent symposium on pervasive frequencies & alien broadcasts, the voice herein described is, in all likelihood, vibrating throughout our physical bodies - along with the multitude of alien & domestic waves which pass perpetually unperceived through “modern” humans for the entirety of our physical lives.
